Bastila Redesign

I've been playing Knights of the Old Republic, it's very y2k, including the character designs so I thought it would be a fun exercise to update some of them starting with Bastila.
For the designs I took a lot of inspiration from Elie Saab's Fall 2019 line as well as some fall/winter looks from Balmain & Alexander McQueen.
My overall focus was finding a design that had a strong silhouette & a vibe that's congruous with Bastila's characterization as a disciplined, measured Jedi. It is also for this reason that I went with a cooler colour palette which would theoretically contrast both Sith opponents & party members like HK, Canderous & the Player character while representing her calmer nature.
I also decided to use a Padawan braid despite them not being present in the Old Republic as they are simply very iconic & would serve as a permanent marker of her turn to the dark later in the story where it would be cut off.

Here's the final concept art for the design.

For this project I used a different process than I typically do. Each outfit was drawn on a different layer to allow for quick iteration, viewing & mix-&-matching of hair & outfits.

For the hair I used a black brush at half opacity to focus more on the form of hair rather than the linework. It was an interesting exercise for quick design work though it made things like braids difficult.

Here's two of the five combination outfit & hair designs. The first combo was a close-runner up.

Here's some of the colour tests including the original pink-maroon & traditional Jedi beige.
The green-yellow-black was a runner-up.

Here's the black & white version of the turn-around. A couple minor adjustments were made to the outfit since the concept art to streamline it along with the heavier stylisation to make it appropriate for an animation or comic project.
